SJU Jazzpodium is within driving distance of Sandton Malie Hotel. Utrecht has a very vibrant Jazz scene, and the music is in a constant state of flux. It incorporates musical cultures from all over the world and improvisation makes each performance a unique experience. Jazz is music at the cutting edge. For over 30 years now, the SJU has been a driving force in the development of jazz in the Netherlands: as a platform for international groups, well-established national celebrities, up-and-coming jazz talent and intimate sessions. It is also a breeding ground for innovative music, its mission being to enable everyone to experience the excitement and adventure of improvised music. The challenge is to seek out and transcend musical frontiers. This is what the SJU is all about.
Come and listen, or play along at one of the Jazz, World, Rhythm and HipHop sessions (every Wednesday from 9.00 p.m.). Discover new music and up-and-coming jazz talent on Thursdays, and enjoy major national and international jazz stars at our gig evenings (Saturdays from 9.00 p.m.). Move to 50s, 60s and 70s grooves with Naald en Kraak (every 1st Thursday of the month), come and dance to funky jazz music (band+dj) at Club Djazzive (every Friday from 9.30 p.m.) or to danceable R&B soul HipHop-Jazz at the Jazzclub (every last Saturday of the month). Expand your musical horizon with new sounds and experiment at U-Ex (every Sunday from 9.00 p.m.), the impro-festival Fire in the City (October) or the Utrecht Jazz Fest (March) and Jazz-a-Palooza (June) festivals.
