A Unique Hotel Collection

Rietveld-Schröderhuis, Sandton Malie Hotel

Within a short drive of Sandton Malie Hotel is the Rietveld-Schröderhuis (Rietveld-Schröder House).
The House - the masterpiece of Gerrit Rietveld, the pinnacle of the “De Stijl” movement, an icon of the city of Utrecht and listed on the World Heritage List – is most definitely worth a visit.  Gerrit Rietveld built this home in 1924, for his client Truus Schröder. The house is the only building ever created according to the architectural principles of the “De Stijl” artistic movement.  The features that typify the “De Stijl” movement are the opening up of the closed façade and the use of the colours red, blue and yellow, in combination with white, grey and black.  A visit to the Rietveld-Schröder House, which has been designed down to the very last detail, is a real experience, as each part of the house tells a story. Truus Schröder had very definite ideas about living and Rietveld expressed these in a completely new way. A visit to the famous house reveals how Schröder's progressive tastes, Rietveld's creativity, the traits of "De Stijl" and modern construction came together in a single design.  It's fascinating to see how a relationship has been formed between interior and exterior and how unity has been created between the free-standing pieces of furniture and the fitted parts of the interior. During your visit to the Rietveld-Schröder House, you will discover Rietveld's importance in the field of twentieth-century architecture and design.
