Domtoren, Sandton Malie Hotel
Within a short drive of Sandton Malie Hotel is the symbol of Utrecht, the Domtoren (Cathedral Tower), which is over 600 years old. The Cathedral Tower is the tallest medieval tower in the Netherlands. An ascent up the Tower is a great opportunity to get to know the city of Utrecht from an entirely different angle! The guide leads you up 465 steps to the top of the tower. You will visit various rooms in the impressive structure, while the guide tells you about the history of the Netherlands’ tallest church tower. Half way up, you will be able to admire the monumental clock, which weighs over 32,000 kg in total! On the next floor up is the splendid seventeenth century Hemony carillon. From the tower’s ramparts, at 70 and 95 metres, there is a spectacular view over both the city and the province of Utrecht.
As well as the regular tours of the Cathedral Tower, there are also special themed tours available to groups. These include great children’s tours, which familiarise participants with the history of the tower and how the clock works in a fun way. There are also a variety of tours aimed specifically at adults, such as the 2000 Years of Change on Cathedral Square or the Building Tour. In addition, the tower can be hired for celebrations, marriages or meetings.
