Utrecht’s Centraal Museum (Central Museum) is within a short drive of Sandton Malie Hotel.
The Central Museum reveals how Utrecht has for centuries been a breeding ground for artistic and cultural talent, both national and international. The Netherlands’ oldest municipal museum boasts the largest collection of Rietveld objects in the world, and displays the work of the world-famous Dick Bruna. Its collection of old masters, which includes works by Jan van Scorel, Abraham Bloemaert and Hendrick ten Brugghen, among others, is also well worth a look. As well as the work of all these Utrecht icons, the Central Museum provides a survey of 2000 years of turbulent history, along with contemporary displays of current fashion, design and visual arts. In short, it’s well worth a visit!
The museum is housed in a former medieval monastery and comprises a collection of buildings around a large courtyard. As you wander amiably around the building’s many corridors and stairwells, prepare to be surprised by the great variety of the collection.
