Botanical gardens, Sandton Malie Hotel
Within walking distance of Sandton Malie Hotel are the botanical gardens of Utrecht Fort Hoofddijk. Fort Hoofddijk is an impressive complex of gardens, laid out around a 19th century fort which is part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (New Dutch Waterline). Here you will find Europe’s largest rock garden with its Alpine plants and the Systeemtuin (“System Garden”), packed with summer flowers. The Thematuin (“Themed Garden”) elucidates diverse themes such as medicinal plants, plants used for dyes and fibres and the defence tactics used by plants, while the adjoining Diertjestuin (“Small Creatures Garden”) is home to all kinds of indigenous insects such as butterflies and dragonflies. In the greenhouse complex, you can admire the many tropical and sub-tropical plants and our extensive collection of orchids.
