Van Abbemuseum,
Sandton Hotel Eindhoven City Centre
The famous Van Abbemuseum stands diagonally opposite Sandton Hotel Eindhoven City Centre, just a short walk away. The Van Abbemuseum is one of the most important museums of modern and contemporary art in the Netherlands. The museum boasts an impressive collection, with works by artists including Picasso, Chagall, Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, Theo van Doesburg, Mondriaan, Appel, Miró and Christo. As well as its own collection, this museum has a pioneering programme of exhibitions, which present the latest developments in contemporary art. The building which houses the Van Abbemuseum is worth the visit in itself. The old museum (1936) by the architect Kropholler was renovated a few years ago. At the same time, a new wing was added. Its striking design, by Dutch architect Abel Cahen, is a major contribution to the museum architecture of the Netherlands. The 27-metre tall tower is the most prominent feature of the new building. The interior is described as refined, minimalist and bold. The new library is one of the Netherlands’ leading knowledge centres for the visual arts.
