Cathedral of St. Michael,
Sandton Hotel Brussels Centre
Just 2 minutes’ walk from Sandton Brussels Centre is the Sint Michiels Kathedraal, the Cathedral of St. Michael, which dates back to 1047. At that time, Duke Lambert II commissioned a new church on the Molenberg in the Romanesque style in honour of St. Michael. St. Michael was an archangel and also the patron saint of Brussels. The church was dedicated on 16 November 1047, but on that day the duke also had the relics of St. Gudula brought to the church. Since then, the official name of the church has been “The collegiate church of Saints Michael and Gudula”. However, the church was still known popularly as the St. Michael’s Cathedral. Nonetheless, the statue above the vestibule is that of St. Gudula, not the archangel St. Michael.
