Royal Museum of Fine Arts,
Sandton Hotel Brussels Centre
Within walking distance of Sandton Brussels Centre lies the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium). The museum houses both the Ancient Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum. Only a handful of museums in the world offer the opportunity to explore the developments in art over the last six centuries within a single museum.
Ancient Art Museum
Not far from Sandton Brussels Centre is the Koninklijk Museum voor schone Kunsten voor Oude kunst (Royal Museum of Fine Arts for Ancient Art). The Ancient Art Museum contains an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the 15th to the 18th century. The collection grew from a core of works of art that were either confiscated by the revolutionaries at the end of the 18th century or deposited by the French state. Over the years, this original collection has been constantly expanded not only with acquisitions, but also donations and bequests from numerous patrons. The collection is dominated by paintings from the former Southern Netherlands.
Modern Art
The Modern Art Museum is situated close to Sandton Brussels Centre. The collections comprise paintings, sculptures and drawings. This museum illustrates artistic developments in the art world from neoclassicism at the end of the 18th century to modern-day video art. Due to infrastructural work, only a selection of works of art from the 19th century and 20th century collections are on display. The Modern Art section also comprises the Antoine Wiertz and Constantin Meunier Museums, which are devoted entirely to the work of these important 19th century Belgian artists.
