Hortus Botanicus, Sandton Hotel De Filosoof
The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world and is within walking distance of Sandton Hotel De Filosoof. Originally, the Hortus, which covers an area of 1.2 hectares, was a medicinal herb garden, established in 1638 by the Amsterdam city administration. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Hortus quickly expanded. Ships of the United East India Company brought not just herbs and spices, but also exotic ornamental plants such as the 300-year-old Eastern Cape giant cycad, or bread tree. Around 6,000 plants of over 4,000 species grow in the outdoor garden and 7 greenhouses of Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. There’s also plenty to keep children amused here, such as the butterfly house.
