Location of the Sandton Residenz Hochalm
Sandton Residenz Hochalm is in Kolling, approximately one and a half kilometres from the centre of Hinterglemm. This location ensures that you are staying in a quiet environment but, at the same time, have plenty of opportunity to explore the Hinterglemm nightlife.
Located directly outside the ski lifts of the Hochalmbahn and Zwölfernordbahn you can put on your skis in the hotel in the morning and head straight for the piste. This makes it a wonderful starting point for trips through the entire area, leaving from either the north or the south side. At the end of the day you simply ski back down the Hochalm and stop right at the door of the Sandton Residenz Hochalm.
The Saalbach-Hinterglemm ski area
The ski area of Saalbach-Hinterglemm is known as “Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang” and is one of the most comprehensive ski areas in Austria. Because of its 480(!) snow cannons the area has guaranteed snow from December to the middle of April. More than 50 ski lifts provide access to 200 km of ski slopes. The descents are varied and offer more than enough possibilities and challenges for novices through to experienced winter sports enthusiasts.
The lifts in Saalbach-Hinterglemm are modern and comfortable. In addition to gondolas for the longer lifts there are also many chairlifts, most of which are covered. There are a few drag lifts in the far corners of the area and on the beginners’ slope. The lift capacity in the area is therefore very capable of supporting the number of visitors. In December new and expanded lifts will open, ensuring that there are hardly any waiting times even in the busiest periods. Throughout the day there is a frequent ski bus and a scheduled bus service.
If you are planning to take lessons the ski school is also easily accessible: the Zwölfernordbahn lift will take you to the top of the Zwölferkogel. From there you ski or snowboard down a red or blue run to the foot of the Zwölferkogel, which is the central starting location of the ski schools.
Saalbach-Hinterglemm
Characteristic of Saalbach-Hinterglemm is the large number of mountain cabins and restaurants, mostly in authentic Austrian style. The vastness of the area and the excellent facilities mean that it never gets really busy and the atmosphere is always relaxed. We recommend a visit to the Pfefferalm: this is an authentic mountain cabin from 1717 that is heated by a log fire and lit by candles. The Pfefferalm is just outside the ski route and is well worth a visit, especially when the weather is bleak...
In addition to the ski facilities the Saalbach–Hinterglemm area has a lot to offer. The villages are known for their lively après-ski scene and a comprehensive range of restaurants and bars, varying from the simple to the highly sophisticated.
During the day you can do your daily shopping here, but you will also enjoy the varied range of boutiques and the cosy restaurants. Needless to say, both villages have a comprehensive range of sports shops where you can buy the latest winter sport fashions and rent or buy your skis or snowboarding equipment.
Lindlingalm
If peace & quiet and nature are more your thing we recommend a hike or sleigh ride to the Lindlingalm. The Sandton Hochalm is ideally located for this outing. The route will take you through a natural area at the end of the valley and the scenery is impressive. No crowds and prepared pistes here; instead you will find virgin snow and beautiful vistas. The Lindlingalm has a mountain-side restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal and a well-deserved glass of wine!
Sandton Hochalm will be pleased to help you book your sleigh ride and reserve a table in the restaurant on the Lindlingalm.
Zell am See
A little further away is Zell am See; this is a small authentic town with a variety of shops and tasteful restaurants and nightlife venues. It is centrally located in the region and many of the facilities that you are unlikely to find in the various valleys you will find in Zell am See. Zell am See is unmistakably a winter sport village, but feels just a little more urban. With the many fashion outlets and atmospheric and sometimes trendy restaurants those who enjoy shopping will find plenty to amuse themselves here for a day.
