The historical Hanse city Deventer sits on the river IJssel, a river described by many as one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands. A visit to Deventer therefore always means finding a little relaxation and enjoyment near the river. Over the last couple of years Deventer has put a lot of effort into renovating and maintaining the historic town centre. The old street layout is virtually still intact and hundreds of monuments have been restored. Deventer calls itself ‘hospitable’ and you will indeed find it very welcoming.
Deventer is a city with a rich and fascinating past which has known many high points and is only 60 minutes from Amsterdam by car. The city belonged to the Hansa Association and is one of the most famous Hansa cities in the Netherlands. All this is reflected in the city’s old streets. Nowadays, Deventer is famed for its vibrant historical city centre with its many shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.
Deventer’s surroundings are also very attractive. Those who love cycling, nature and culture will be truly indulged here. The picturesque villages of Diepenveen, Schalkhaar, Lettele, Okkenbroek and Bathmen are all very close to Deventer and here nature can be enjoyed during every season. Apeldoorn with its crown estate and National Park “De Hoge Veluwe”, are only 15 minutes drive away.
Annually many large events are organised in Deventer with highlights such as the book fair and the Dickens festival.
